Surgical Volume and Procedure Logs

LSU Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residents logged 12,468 procedures in 2026 across the full scope of the residency. This total includes procedures within the four major operative categories tracked by CODA—Trauma, Pathology, Orthognathic Surgery, and Reconstructive/Cosmetic Surgery—as well as procedures classified as “Other,” a supplemental category used to capture routine dentoalveolar procedures such as dental extractions in conjunction with major operative procedures within the 4 major categories as well as IV Sedations.

To better represent major operative experience, LSU separately reports graduating chief resident volume with the “Other” category excluded. At graduation in 2026, chief residents averaged 1,222 major operative procedures per resident accumulated over the course of their residency, across Trauma, Pathology, Orthognathic Surgery, and Reconstructive/Cosmetic Surgery.

Operative responsibility begins during the intern year and increases progressively throughout training as residents demonstrate competence. LSU's training philosophy is simple: “Cut Early. Cut Often.”
