Patient Care

Advanced Education Clinics

In the advanced education clinics, residents (dentists who are seeking specialized training) provide patient care under the close supervision of faculty members. Dental care is not provided free of charge, but fees in the advanced education clinics are heavily reduced from the cost of treatment in private dental care.

Services Provided
LSUHSC School of Dentistry advanced education clinics offer treatment in the areas of general dentistry, endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orofacial pain, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, and prosthodontics.

Become a Patient
Many of our advanced education departments accept patients for screening only if they have been referred from a dentist or physician. Not all screened patients are accepted into a program and only patients with cases that meet the educational needs of the residents will be accepted. Consult the specific program web page for more information.

Referring dentists should call the number listed on the individual clinic page (see links above and at left).

Hours of Operation
Hours vary for each department.

Payment Options
Dental care is not provided free of charge. However, as a teaching institution, LSUSD's fees are substantially reduced from that of private practice. This courtesy is extended to patients due to the increased time required for care. Patients are expected to pay for services at the time of the appointment. Any treatment that involves laboratory costs must be paid in advance of the procedure. Cash, personal checks, VISA, Mastercard, Discover, money orders, Apple pay and Samsung pay are accepted.

Patients may apply for credit through Campus Federal Credit Union’s Mastercard® credit cards. For more information about their Campus Prestige or Rewards Mastercard®, please visit CampusFederal.org/LSU_Dental_Mastercard.

Emergency Care
This service is only available to active patients of record of the School. The School considers a patient’s status as active once that person is accepted for treatment at the screening appointment until the patient is officially inactivated. Once a patient is inactivated, the School will treat dental emergencies for 30 days so as to allow time to find another provider. The School does not have a walk-in emergency clinic and does not treat individuals who are not active patients.

All active patients who have dental emergencies are treated at the School during normal business hours. Active patients who have an emergency outside of business hours should contact their student dentist who will contact the on-call resident; the on-call resident will subsequently contact the patient and render care. If that is not possible, the patient should call the after-hours answering service at (504) 456-5322. The answering service will contact the resident on emergency call who will subsequently contact the patient and render care.
