The campus
of LSUHSC School of
Dentistry has 300,000
square feet of clinic,
research, classroom and
office space. This
includes four floors of
clinics and two patient
simulation laboratories
where students practice
dentistry prior to actual
patient care. There is
also a state-of-the-art
continuing education
learning center.
Major
renovations of two of the
teaching laboratories are
now underway. Also being
renovated is the first
floor of the
administration building,
which will house a patient
education center and
student lounge with
wireless access.
In 2005, the
flooding following
Hurricane Katrina forced
the school to relocate to
Baton Rouge for two years.
In 2007, all faculty,
staff and students
returned to the New
Orleans campus. The
facilities in Baton Rouge
are now being used as
clinics and classrooms,
which means that education
and patient care services
have been expanded. All
clinics in New Orleans are
open and the full schedule
of classes are underway.
The school is also
experiencing a rebirth of
research with the
rebuilding of three floors
of laboratory space.
As with any
great institution, the
dental school is so much
more than our buildings.
One source of enormous
pride to everyone
affiliated with the school
is that every class since
Katrina has graduated. We
never skipped a beat,
despite the epic
destruction faced by the
dental school.
Since its
founding in 1968, the
school has educated 4,258
dentists, dental
hygienists and lab techs.
This translates to 75% of
the dental health care
providers in Louisiana
today.
