                                                  Bids Farewell to the
                                                  Masons On July 13,
                                              faculty, staff, and
                                              students bid an emotional
                                              farewell to Dr. John
                                              (Sandy) and Carrie Mason,
                                              as they began their
                                              retirement from the LSU
                                              School of Dentistry. With
                                              a combined 50 years at
                                              LSUSD, the Masons leave
                                              behind many friends and a
                                              legacy of excellence in
                                              teaching, patient care,
                                              and service. A 1981
                                              graduate of the LSUSD
                                              periodontics advanced
                                              education program, Sandy
                                                Mason, DDS,
                                              associate professor of
                                              clinical periodontics,
                                              returned to the school as
                                              a faculty member in 1994.
                                              He received his DDS from
                                              Virginia Commonwealth
                                              University-Medical College
                                              of Virginia School of
                                              Dentistry in 1974,
                                              followed by 20 years of
                                              active duty in the U.S.
                                              Navy. During this time he
                                              completed both a general
                                              dentistry residency at the
                                              Philadelphia Naval
                                              Hospital and the LSUSD
                                              periodontics residency,
                                              achieving American Board
                                              of Periodontology
                                              certification in 1993. Dr. Mason
                                              directed the periodontics
                                              predoctoral program at
                                              LSUSD for ten years. In
                                              2014, he received the
                                              American Academy of
                                              Periodontology Educator's
                                              Award. With Dr. Ray Yukna,
                                              he co-authored a chapter
                                              in all four editions of
                                              the textbook Comprehensive
                                                Periodontics for the
                                                Dental Hygienist.

                                                Flintom Mason, RDH, MEd,
                                              professor of comprehensive
                                              dentistry and
                                              biomaterials, program in
                                              dental hygiene, had
                                              directed the program since
                                              1996. She received her
                                              bachelor of science in
                                              dental hygiene from the
                                              University of North
                                              Carolina at Chapel Hill in
                                              1970. She earned her
                                              masters in education in
                                              1975 at Loyola University
                                              in New Orleans while a
                                              member of the dental
                                              hygiene faculty there. In
                                              1977 she joined the LSUSD
                                              Department of Community
                                              and Preventive Dentistry,
                                              directing the program in
                                              dental hygiene from
                                              1979-1981. The Masons
                                              were married in 1981.
                                              While Dr. Mason was on
                                              active duty in the Navy,
                                              Ms. Mason taught at the
                                              University of Hawaii and
                                              worked in private practice
                                              in Honolulu, Guam, and San
                                              Diego. After their
                                              return to LSUSD in 1994,
                                              Ms. Mason taught for two
                                              years as a member of the
                                              dental hygiene faculty
                                              before assuming
                                              directorship of the
                                              program. In addition to
                                              serving as director of
                                              dental and dental hygiene
                                              courses, she steered the
                                              program through four
                                              highly successful
                                              Commission on Dental
                                              Accreditation site visits. We wish the
                                              Masons much happiness in
                                              their retirement!   Robert
                                                Barsley, LDA President In April
                                              Robert E. Barsley, Jr.,
                                              DDS, JD, was installed as
                                              president of the Louisiana
                                              Dental Association for
                                              2016-2017. A professor in
                                              the LSUSD Department of
                                              Diagnostic Sciences and
                                              director of Oral Health
                                              Resources and Community
                                              and Hospital Dentistry,
                                              Dr. Barsley is a 1977
                                              graduate of LSUSD. In 1987
                                              he earned a law degree
                                              from Loyola University in
                                              New Orleans and was
                                              admitted to the Louisiana
                                              bar that same year. 
 A past
                                              speaker of the LDA House
                                              of Delegates and LDA
                                              Secretary/Treasurer, Dr.
                                              Barsley is also a former
                                              general chairman of the
                                              New Orleans Dental
                                              Conference and former
                                              member of the NODA Board
                                              of Governors. In 2012 he
                                              served as president of the
                                              American Academy of
                                              Forensic Sciences. In 2015
                                              he was named LSUSD Alumnus
                                              of the Year and he
                                              recently received the NODA
                                              Honor Dentist Award.

                                                        Robert E.
                                                        Barsley, Jr.,
                                                        DDS, JD |  Dr. Barsley
                                              has served as a consultant
                                              to numerous coroners'
                                              offices in southern
                                              Louisiana and is on staff
                                              at the coroner's office in
                                              both Orleans and Jefferson
                                              parishes. Among his
                                              goals as LDA president is
                                              to continue the
                                              cooperative relationship between the
                                              LDA and LSUSD.
 Congratulations
                                              to Dr. Barsley for his
                                              attainment of this
                                              distinguished position and for his years
                                              of generous service to the
                                              Louisiana dental
 community.
