The
Student Research Program
provides the students
of the LSU Health Sciences
Center School of Dentistry
the opportunity to enhance
their experience as a
student. Research provides
an added dimension to
their education by offering
undergraduates, postgraduates,
and those mastering in
Oral Biology the chance
to see how new knowledge
is generated. Also, residents
from several programs
such as Endodontics, Oral
Medicine, Orthodontics,
Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics,
and Prosthodontics are
currently involved with
research projects. The
residents and student
participants get to work
with The Center faculty
member of choice, develop
skills in analyzing and
writing critical reviews
and scientific journals,
and have the opportunity
to publish their research
in scientific literature.
The experience can enhance
clinical performance and
also spark an interest
in pursuing careers in
academic dentistry after
graduation. Students are
not required to participate
in research programs while
achieving their degrees,
but are highly encouraged
to take advantage of the
opportunity while having
access to our state-of-the-art
facility.
Studies of composite
and restorative materials,
inflammation and
infectious disease,
craniofacial development,
periodontal disease
and regeneration,
craniofacial wound
healing and implants,
regulation of pain,
and oral effects
of systemic diseases
are currently being
investigated by student
researchers here
at the LSU Dental
School.
Research Day
Students are encouraged
to present their
research findings
at an annual Research
Day. This event has
traditionally been
a forum for residents
completing their
post-graduate programs
to present their
research to their
colleagues. In 2003,
this event was expanded to include
all those undergraduate
dental students,
staff and faculty.
Awards are traditionally
given to the most
outstanding post-graduate
research project
and undergraduate
research project.
Travel
Opportunities
Students
are encouraged to present their research at major
national meetings. In the last few years, fourteen students presented at the AADR
annual meeting in Honolulu, HI (2004), and sixteen students
presented at the 2005 IADR meeting in Baltimore. The 2008 IADR meeting will be held in Toronto on July 2-5, 2008.
In addition, students
are also eligible
to represent the
school at the several
meetings whose focus
is student research.
Application
Forms
Students wishing to
do research should
contact the Student
Research Coordinator,
Dr.
Thomas Lallier.
He will be able to
provide the student
with a current list
of faculty mentors,
and advise the student
so that their research
experience can be
tailored to their
individual interests.
Forms pertaining
to research proposal
preparation and research
funding opportunities
are available through
the intranet site
(U:/Student Research).
Award
Opportunities
Students have the opportunity
to receive awards
of up to $3,000 to
support their research.
In order to receive
these awards, students
are required to submit
a formal written
proposal. These proposals
are review by a panel
of faculty and recommendations
are made.
Additional Honors
LSU School of Dentistry has recently initiated an "Honors in Research" program. Under this program, students who perform research are eligible to receive an "Honors" designation on their diploma.
