Scholarship Recipients, 2011-2012

ADA Foundation Dental Laboratory Technology Scholarship
DLT first-year student Joe Chih Hui Lee has been selected to receive a Dental Laboratory Technology Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 for the 2011-2012 Academic Year. Students submit a detailed application to the ADA Foundation which selects the scholarship recipient. Qualifications for the scholarship are based on stringent academic achievement, leadership, research, service achievements and volunteerism. The purpose of the program is to provide financial assistance to qualified students to encourage them to pursue careers in dentistry.

Baldridge Scholarship
The following students received the 2011 Baldridge Scholarship for their outstanding academic achievements in 2010-2011. Five scholarships in the amount of $500.00 are awarded in each class to the students with the highest overall GPA. The first-year dental students are selected on undergraduate GPA and performance on the DAT examination.

Delta Dental of Arkansas Scholarship
Zachary Bulmanski is the recipient of the first Delta Dental of Arkansas Scholarship. This award, in the amount of $250.00, honors a fourth-year dental student from Arkansas for high academic achievement.

Pierre Fauchard Academy Scholarship
At orientation for the senior dental class on July 19, 2012, Erica Hender received the 2012 Pierre Fauchard Academy Scholarship, which honors a third-year dental student who has demonstrated the greatest potential for developing into an outstanding leader in the dental profession. Selection criteria include leadership, professionalism and GPA. Erica, who comes from Denham Springs, Louisiana, graduated from the LSUSD program in dental hygiene in 2003.

J.E. Hargrove DDS Scholarship
Dr. James Eryk Hargrove, a 2008 graduate of LSUSD, recently established a scholarship fund that awards $500 each year of dental school to a first-year dental student. This year's recipient is Lauren Hayden, a native of Baton Rouge and 2010 graduate of LSU. Lauren worked as an expanded duty dental assistant before starting dental school.

The scholarship follows the student as long as he/she maintains a 3.0 GPA. Each year Dr. Hargrove will award another scholarship to a first-year student.

Hotel Dieu Medical and Dental Staff Scholarship in Dentistry
The 2011 recipient of the Hotel Dieu Medical and Dental Staff Scholarship in Dentistry is Nicole Thieler. The scholarship honors a fourth-year dental student who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship, leadership, and professionalism for the first three years of dental school.

C. Edmund Kells Society Student Scholar Award
Junior students are selected based on professional integrity, professional judgment, leadership skills, clinical skills, academic acumen, and participation in extracurricular activities. These two individuals are looked upon by their Kells Society classmates as exceptional student dentists and exceptional individuals. This year's student Scholar recipients are Christy Lottinger and Sean Sebourn.

LAMMICO Scholarship
First-year dental student Kathleen Adley has been awarded the merit scholarship presented each year by the Louisiana Medical Mutual Insurance Company (LAMMICO). The scholarship is awarded to a high-achieving student to help defray tuition and other expenses. Ms. Adley, a native of Lafayette, Louisiana, graduated from LSU in Baton Rouge.

LAMMICO, founded in the 1980s, provides malpractice insurance for the dental and medical professions. Since 2000, the Metairie firm has awarded 33 scholarships, each in the amount of $6,000, to first-year dental and medical students at Louisiana schools.

Louisiana Health Professional Development Scholarship
Mary Webster, first-year dental student, is the first dental student to be awarded this scholarship, which is designed to address the severe shortage of primary care providers in Health Professional Shortage Areas. Mary attended the University of Louisiana at Monroe on a scholarship and graduated summa cum laude in 2011.

Omicron Kappa Upsilon
Katie Evans is the recipient of the Dr. William S. Kramer Award of Excellence established by the OKU Supreme Chapter in 1986. The purpose of this award is to recognize a rising junior dental student at each Component Chapter School who has demonstrated scholarship, character, and the potential promise for the advancement of dentistry and service to humanity as shown by Dr. Kramer's dedication to his profession, his specialty, and the principles and ideals of Omicron Kappa Upsilon.

Each year Theta Kappa Chapter presents the Randolph B. Malloy/OKU Scholarship for Academic Excellence to two senior dental students. The scholarships are based on the students' academic excellence, leadership, professionalism, and service. Dr. Malloy was a faculty member in oral surgery who lead the construction of the school in Baton Rouge after Hurricane Katrina and coordinated the return back to New Orleans in 2007. For his leadership example, the award is named in his memory. The 2012 recipients are Nicole Thieler and Mohammed Ismail.

James L. Rodriguez Rodgers & Betty Rodgers Scholarship
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide assistance and encouragement to worthy dental students who have completed the LSUSD Summer Enrichment Program. The program encourages under-represented minority students and students from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue a career in dentistry. Dr. James Rodgers is a 1976 LSUSD graduate.

First-year dental students Yolanda Bell, Marcela Jolivette, Jessica Whiteside, Tosha Woods, and Kathlene Zuniga each received $200.00 and will continue to receive it each year until graduation. This is the first year that the scholarships have been awarded.

William F. Toler Memorial Scholarship
Erica Hender, third-year dental student, is the recipient of the Toler Memorial Scholarship for 2011. This scholarship honors a third-year dental student who has shown outstanding academic ability throughout the first two years of school and has earned a high opinion within the dental school community for scholarship, leadership and citizenship, and professionalism.

Tracy Helm Scholarship
On April 18, 2012, senior dental hygiene student Bridget Andrieu received the 2012 Tracy Helm Scholarship in Dental Hygiene in the amount of $1,000.00. The scholarship honors a senior dental hygiene student who is outgoing, kind and considerate of her faculty, fellow students, and patients.

Grace Voigt Scholarship
The Grace Voigt Scholarship honors a second-, third-, and fourth-year dental student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership, concern for fellow students and patients, high ethical standards, and dedication to the profession of dentistry. The 2011 recipients are Rosalie Nguyen, D2, Erica Hender, D3, and Stuart Huntsman, D4.

Harold Wirth Award for Ethics and Professionalism
Spencer Gordy, third-year dental student, is the first recipient of the Harold Wirth Award for Ethics and Professionalism. Sponsored by the Harold Wirth Study Club, Gordy received the $500.00 award at the F. Harold Wirth Professionalism Ceremony on November 18, 2011. The award honors a student who has demonstrated ethical professional behavior and is in good academic standing.
