Stephanie Weaver, DDS, President

Dr. Stephanie B. Weaver, a general dentist practicing in Lake Charles, was installed as president of the Louisiana Dental Association (LDA) for 2013-2014 during its 133rd House of Delegates meeting held March 9, 2013, at the Shreveport Convention Center.

Dr. Weaver is originally from New Orleans and received her bachelor of science from the University of Florida in 1995. She graduated from the LSU School of Dentistry (LSUSD) in 1999.

Dr. Weaver has been a strong leader at both the local and state levels. She is a member of the Southwest District Dental Association, the LDA, and the American Dental Association (ADA). Dr. Weaver has also served as president of the Calcasieu Parish Study Club, a delegate to the LDA House of Delegates, and is a past member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. She served on the Board of Directors of the LDA for six years before becoming president-elect in 2012, and has been a member of the ADA House of Delegates for two years.

Besides maintaining a full-time private practice in Lake Charles, Dr. Weaver is active in several civic and community organizations. She is a member of the Junior League of Lake Charles, a board member for the Kirby Street Center for Community Enrichment, and a board member for the Lake Charles Civic Ballet.

Dr. Weaver and her husband, Dr. Daniel Weaver, have two children, Abby and Jake.

 

Nelson Daly, DDS, President-Elect

Dr. Daly has been a strong leader in the local, state and national levels of organized dentistry. He is a past president of the Greater Baton Rouge Dental Association, former membership chair and board member of the LDA and served on the ADA Committee for the New Dentist. Not only is he a member of the Academy of General Dentistry and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID), but he is also a founding member of the Baton Rouge Community Clinic, volunteers for Donated Dental Services and is a founding member of both the Baton Rouge Study Club and the Baton Rouge CEREC Study Club. He is also a member of Advanced Dental Implant Studies (ADIS).

He is a former chair of the LSUSD Alumni Association. He received the LSUSD Alumni Association Leadership Award in 1993, the LDA New Dentist Award in 2000, and is a Fellow in both the Academy of General Dentistry and in the Academy of Dentistry International. He is also an associate Fellow in the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID).

Besides maintaining a full-time private practice in Baton Rouge, Dr. Daly is active in several civic and community organizations. He and his wife, Dr. Sally Daly, are also avid supporters and members of the Krewe de Louisiana. They have a daughter, Lesley Wolfe.

 

LDA 2013 Awards

George Arch, DDS

The New Dentist Award is presented annually to one LDA member who has practiced for less than 10 years and has given his/her time and talents for the betterment of mankind. Such contributions include civic involvement, public service and unselfish devotion to the dental profession.

Dr. George Arch has exemplified himself as a leader in his dental district association. He is a member of the ADA, the LDA and the New Orleans Dental Association (NODA).

After graduating from the LSU School of Dentistry and then completing an endodontics residency program, Dr. Arch became active in organized dentistry. At the state level, he has been a member of the LDA House of Delegates since 2007. He is also a member of the Council on the New Dentist, and also served on the ADA New Dentist Committee from 2008-2009. Dr. Arch served as a board member and in various roles with NODA since 2007 and was the 2012 president. He has also been a volunteer with the New Orleans Dental Conference and LDA Annual Session since 2007.

Dr. Arch is a clinical assistant professor of endodontics at the LSU School of Dentistry and has lectured for the New Orleans Dental Hygiene Association. He is also a member of the American Association of Endodontists and a volunteer with the Academy of the Sacred Heart and the Dental Lifeline Network.

Dr. Arch and his wife, Shannon, have one daughter, Ava.

 

Distinguished Service Award

Charles Foy, DDS

Dr. Foy, of Madisonville, has been a member of the LDA, the ADA and the Northlake Dental Association for over 28 years. He has served in numerous capacities in the local, state and national arenas, including his position as LDA president from 2009-2010. He was also a member of the LDA Board of Directors from 2006-2008 prior to becoming an officer, as well as a member of the Council on Insurance and Council on LDA Sessions.

As interim chairman on the Council on LDA Sessions, Dr. Foy also served on the New Orleans Dental Conference and LDA Annual Session planning committee as the exhibits chairman. He has also been a member of the LDA and ADA Houses of Delegates since 1991. In his commitment to serving his local component, Dr. Foy was a board member of the Northlake Dental Association from 1986-2008 and served as the president in 1992. He was the ADA's 12th Trustee District Vice Chairman in 2010 and is currently the secretary treasurer.

Dr. Foy has always been a proponent of organized dentistry and also involved in the AGD. Among his many positions with the Louisiana AGD, he was the 2000 president, the 2012 legislative chair, and recipient of the AGD's Lifetime Learning and Service Recognition Award in 2011. He is currently the president of the Louisiana International College of Dentists, was appointed by the governor to the Louisiana Fluoridation Advisory Board, and serves on the Dental Lifeline Network Board of Directors.

As an avid believer in continuing education, Dr. Foy has been elected as a fellow and master in the AGD, as well as being a fellow in the Pierre Fauchard Dental Society, the International College of Dentists, and the American College of Dentists. He was also the 2008 recipient of the AGD's Mark Locantro Award for distinguished service.

Dr. Foy was also an associate professor at his alma mater, the LSU School of Dentistry, from 2006-2009, and on their Alumni Advisory Council from 2000-2005. He has been a Kiwanis Club member since 1987, a volunteer for the Samaritan Center and St. Vincent DePaul Society's All Saints dental clinic since 1990, a lector with St. Peter Catholic Church since 1995, a Knights of Columbus member since 2004, and a Rotary International member since 2011. He is a dental consultant/forensic odontologist for St. Tammany Parish Coroner's Office, has helped to build several houses with Habitat for Humanity, and participated in dental missions in Honduras and Guatemala.

Dr. Foy and his wife, Anne, have three daughters, Elizabeth, Catherine and Sarah.

 

L. King Scott, DDS

Dr. Scott, a general dentist in Monroe, has been a member of the LDA, the ADA, and the Northeast Louisiana Dental Association (NELDA) for over 35 years. He has served in numerous capacities in the local, state and national arenas, and has been a lifelong advocate of education and advanced learning. He is currently a member of the LDA Board of Directors. He has also served the LDA in many capacities, including serving on the Distinguished Service Award Committee from 2007-2012 and as chair from 2009-2012, and he is an ADA Grassroots Action Team Leader, chairman of the 2005-2006 Annual Session Task Force, and member of the board of the Louisiana Dental Political Action Committee (LDPAC) from 1996-2007.

He has also been very active in NELDA and on the NELDA officer slate, serving as president in 2007 and as the Cotton Roll Gazette newsletter editor from 2003-2006. Dr. Scott was awarded the NELDA Dentist of the Year Presidential Award in 2008.

Because of his exemplary dedication to the dental profession, Dr. Scott has been recognized by a number of organizations. In 2012, the Louisiana Academy of General Dentistry presented him with the Mark Locantro Memorial Award for distinguished service. In 2009, he was also Louisiana's first recipient of the AGD Lifetime Learning and Service Recognition Award, and in 2007, he received the Academy for Sports Dentistry Distinguished Service Award.

As an alumnus of the LSU School of Dentistry, Dr. Scott has also been a financial supporter of the school and is currently a member of the board of directors of the alumni association. In 2011, he was also appointed as an adjunct faculty member in the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) School of Dental Hygiene.

Having trained all over the country in various professional development and continuing education programs, Dr. Scott has qualified as both a fellow and master in the AGD and as a fellow in the Academy of Sports Dentistry and in the Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. In 1996-1997, he was also the national president of the Academy of Sports Dentistry.

His wife is Kari Plaschke Scott.

 

Donald Toso, DDS, MS

Dr. Toso, an orthodontist in New Orleans, has been a member of the LDA, the ADA and the NODA for over 46 years. He has served in numerous capacities in the local, state and national arenas, including his position as LDA president from 1986-1987. He was also chairman of the Council on Dental Health in 1973 and LDA's secretary-treasurer from 1983-1985.

Dr. Toso served in many leadership positions within NODA, including as president in 1978. Dr. Toso also served as 2008 chairman of the New Orleans Dental Conference and LDA Annual Session. His involvement at the ADA level included membership in the House of Delegates and on the American Dental Political Action Committee Board and chairman of the Council on Insurance. As an active member of organized dentistry within his specialty of orthodontics, Dr. Toso served as chairman of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) Public Relations Council and was named as founding Board Chairman of the AAO Insurance Company (a Risk Retention Group).

In the Greater New Orleans area, Dr. Toso has served on the boards of the Louisiana Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped, the Bayou River Health Systems Agency, and the New Orleans Board of Health.

Dr. Toso is a clinical professor of orthodontics at the LSU School of Dentistry, where he has been teaching part-time for over 40 years. He has also received distinguished service awards from the NODA and the Southern Association of Orthodontists. He practices with his daughter, Dr. Jamie Toso in uptown New Orleans. Daughter Cee Cee Nix works in Houston, Texas, in the oil and gas field, and son, US Navy Lieutenant Commander Donald Toso, Jr., is stationed in Norfolk, Virginia.
