Obtaining Books and Journal Articles
Distance Education Students are defined as students who are currently enrolled in a course at LSUHSC and reside outside the Metropolitan New Orleans area.  The following interlibrary loan services are available to our Distance Education students:

ILLiad
LSUHSC Libraries offer an automated system for requesting materials called ILLiad (
http://illiad.lsuhsc.edu/illiad/ill.html).  When registering, please be sure to include the letters DE after your last name (as if you were a jr.), so that the library staff will be certain to treat your items as distance education requests.  All requests (either owned or not) should be entered into ILLiad for processing.

Books (Owned by LSUHSC Libraries)
Circulating books owned by LSUHSC Libraries will be shipped via a commercial carrier to the DE student at the Libraries’ cost, but the student will be required to ship the item back using a commercial mail provider (USPS continues to have difficulty in delivering packages.  Return information will be enclosed for your convenience. Return the book on or before the due date. Books may be renewed by telephone (504-941-8158)
one time only.  Check the Libraries' online catalog to find material (http://innopac.lsuhsc.edu/).

Books (Not Owned by LSUHSC Libraries)
Unfortunately, because of shipping issues, the Library will not fill book requests for not owned items.  Most local public libraries offer interlibrary loan services for monographs.

Journals (Owned by LSUHSC Libraries)
Many of the journals owned by the LSUHSC Libraries are available full-text online via the Libraries' catalog.  An LSUHSC barcode and PIN are required for using full-text journals off-campus.  Please contact the Circulation Desk at 504-941-8158 for more information.  Downloading these articles directly is appropriate.

Articles that are owned by the LSUHSC Libraries in print only will be photocopied and mailed or faxed without charge. However, there is a 50-page per article maximum, and only 5 requests will be processed per day. Check the Libraries' catalog to find materials.

Journals (Not Owned by LSUHSC Libraries)
Articles that are not owned by the LSUHSC Libraries will be borrowed from other libraries.  Some articles are available free of cost, but many require either borrowing or copyright fees; the minimum charge to accept is $11.  Indicate whether or not you are willing to pay on the individual article request form.  A monthly invoice will be generated and should be paid promptly.  Failure to reimburse the Library will cause a cessation of service.

Reserves
Reserve materials are available in the Library and may not be sent through ILL.  If a required reading is needed, contact your instructor or the Library and arrangements to accommodate your need will be attempted.
