Dr. Kavas H. Thunthy is a professor of oral and maxillofacial radiology in the Department of Oral Diagnosis, Medicine, Radiology, at the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in New Orleans, since 1975. In 1981 he was board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. He received the certificate of general education from the University of Cambridge, England, in 1962; the dental degree from the University of Bombay, India, in 1969; the M.S. degree in dental radiology at the University of Alabama, in 1975; the M.Ed. degree at the University of New Orleans, in 1978; and was named a fellow in the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology in 1978. For 20 years Dr. Thunthy was also a consultant at the Charity Hospital in New Orleans (the Medical Center of Louisiana). He is a past president of Theta Kappa chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon honor society and a past president of the New Orleans section of the American Association for Dental Research. He was awarded membership to the C. Edmund Kells Honor Society as the outstanding faculty member. At the LSU School of Dentistry he is the chair of the Radiation Safety Committee, and at the LSU Health Sciences Center he is a member of the Radiation Safety Committee. From 1994 to 1997 he was the councilor on academy affairs for the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. During the past 27 years he has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Oral Surgery Oral Medicine Oral Pathology Oral Radiology, and on the following committees for the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology: quality assurance, educational standards, research and technology, history, position papers, and communications. In 2001 he was appointed to the Advisory Board of the Journal of the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Thunthy has published more than 78 research and educational articles (for 69 of those he was the primary author), and has received extensive research funding from sources such as BRSG grants from the National Institutes of Health, medical research grants from the State of Louisiana, and grants from corporations such as Eastman Kodak Company. He has conducted 44 research experiments, 40 of which have been published in journals. He is the author of chapters in various books including Clark's Clinical Dentistry Vol.1, Kasle’s Basic Principles of Oral Radiography, 1985 Year Book of Dentistry, and 1998 Year Book of Dentistry. Dr.Thunthy is the author of the textbook entitled Dental Radiographic Diagnosis, editions 1 and 2. Since 1975, Dr. Thunthy has presented 155 continuing education courses and 62 scientific presentations to dentists at local, state, national, and international levels. In addition to his academic duties, he has a part-time faculty practice in oral and maxillofacial radiology specializing in dental implant tomography. June 2003
