The "Standards for Advanced Education
Programs in Endodontics" is used as a guide for
curriculum design. Approximately 60% of the
students' time is spent in the clinic, 25% in basic
science and clinical science lectures and seminars, 5%
in research activities, and 10% in teaching.
Full time participation for a minimum of
24 months is mandatory for the certificate program.

Holidays and Leave section below).
The Master of Science in Oral Biology
requires enrollment for a minimum of one additional year
after completion of the certificate program (total of
three years).
CLINICAL PROGRAM AND REQUIREMENTS:
The clinical emphasis is on developing
proficiency with a single basic technique, although
competence with alternative techniques is demanded.
Clinical experience will include the complete scope of
endodontic practice. Medically compromised patients, as
well as healthy patients, are treated under appropriate
supervision. The range of treatment includes: emergency
and diagnostic treatment; conservative and surgical
therapy; vital and non-vital bleaching procedures;
implants, replants, and root-extrusion techniques.
A minimum of 300 clinical cases must be
completed. These cases must be reviewed with a faculty
member, and must demonstrate a clinically acceptable
result. There must be a variety of treatment modalities.
At least 10 of these cases must be
potential "Board Cases" that are presented for review in
conjunction with an oral "mock board" examination.
Students must perform acceptably in this process before
the Certificate in Endodontics is awarded.
RESEARCH PROGRAM AND REQUIREMENTS:
An original research project must also
be completed. This research must result in the
production of a publishable manuscript. The results must
also be presented in an oral presentation at LSUSD, or
in any presentation format at a national meeting (AAE,
IADR, etc.).
DIDACTIC PROGRAM AND REQUIREMENTS:
Students are required to take the
following courses:
Interdepartmental Courses:
Oral Medicine and Clinical Diagnosis
Periodontal and Pulpal Biology
Immunology
Advanced Radiology
Advanced Head and Neck Anatomy
Research Methodology
Statistical Methods in the Health Sciences
Research
Diagnosis of Lesions (Pathology)
Occlusion and TMJ Dysfunction
Oral Implantology
Conscious Sedation and Pain Control
Chronic Pain Control
Endodontic Department Courses:
Basic Endodontic Review
Topical Literature Review of Endodontics
Clinical Endodontic Seminar
Endodontic Journal Club
TEACHING PROGRAM AND REQUIREMENTS:
Teaching experience must be gained while
in the program. This allows consolidation of knowledge
by requiring instant analysis and judgement in guiding
predoctoral students in preclinical and clinical
procedures.
