The Department actively supports the mission of the School of Dentistry ? Teaching, Research, and Service. Teaching is accomplished at all levels: Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Continuing Education, and peer faculty.
Undergraduate courses are presented to both the dental and dental hygiene students. The scope of courses presented extends beyond the usual parameters of Endodontics. The Department is the primary teaching and clinical center for dental cosmetic procedures such as microabrasion, internal bleaching of devitalized teeth, and vital bleaching (tray procedures and power bleaching). Trauma management and athletic mouthguard construction are taught to both dental and hygiene students. The Department offers advanced endodontic instruction and clinical experience to senior dental students on an elective basis.
Both teaching and research on the Postgraduate level have been enhanced. The Department offers courses in advanced Endodontics to other Postgraduate programs and truly qualifies as a teaching center for the School. To enhance the program, a major renovation of the Endodontic clinic is in progress. All operatory chairs have been replaced. Each of the 17 units
are equipped with state-of-the-art ASI carts. Additionally, a networked digital radiography system
with dynamic ISP addressing connects all Postgraduate computers.
Nine ceiling mounted microscopes are in place and two additional
units will be added in 2005. A portable unit is available
for undergraduate teaching.
Continuing Education is a high priority for the Department. The faculty regularly participate in both Department and School sponsored programs. Simulation clinics are available for clinical courses. Distance Learning and Internet Continuing Education courses are planned for the upcoming year. Other innovations include an Endodontic course presented in Spanish.
The Department of Endodontics is a visible entity within the School of Dentistry. The faculty continually search for innovative ways to improve the mission of teaching, research, and service.
