Message
from the President
I
want to thank my fellow LSUSD alumni members for
the privilege and honor to serve as the 2005-2006
president of the LSU School of Dentistry Alumni
Association. LSUSD has gained international
recognition as a leader in research, community
outreach programs, and clinical and technological
enhancements. I am proud to be associated with
such a great institution.
Our dental school is one that is expanding its
physical presence throughout Louisiana—providing
oral health care services in over twenty-two
locations statewide. One project close to my
heart is the LSUSD dental-hygiene educational
program, a collaborative effort of the Lafayette
Health Care Clinic (LCHCC), the LSU School of
Dentistry, and the University of Louisiana at
Lafayette. Dental students also rotate through
the clinic to provide much-needed dental care to
the working uninsured of Lafayette parish.
These accomplishments, and
so many others, are the result of the strong
leadership of Dean Eric Hovland, the faculty,
loyal students, and the dental community. While
advancements at LSUSD are ongoing, significant
challenges lay ahead.
Technology is changing
rapidly and the school must upgrade its facilities
and infrastructure to address the new learning
modalities of the future. As president, my
primary goal is to assist the school’s leadership
in identifying the financial resources to fund
these upgrades. This year, the Alumni Association
will launch a comprehensive campaign to renovate
and equip the school’s thirty-five-year-old
auditoriums for twenty-first century learning. I
hope all of our alumni and friends will sincerely
consider supporting this important endeavor. As
soon as firm plans are in place, we will share
them with everyone.
Other goals include
increasing private and corporate support for our
education and research efforts and increasing
student participation. Student involvement with
our alumni association is growing with the
assistance of our dean, helping to prepare them
for future leadership roles in the dental
profession.
We should all be very proud
of our school, so giving back should be a priority
for all alumni. I urge all to “give back” in some
form whether it is in time, finances, or both.
Geaux Tigers!
