The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology seeks to promote education, research, and practice of its specialty. It is uniquely situated in the curriculum between the basic and clinical sciences and provides over 350 didactic hours of instruction to dental and dental hygiene students. Additionally, over 50 hours of didactic instruction is given annually in support of training programs for postgraduate students and residents. With its Oral Pathology Biopsy Service, the department offers support to the clinics, processing and interpreting biopsies from school patients. All faculty actively participate in clinic consults throughout the school. The department is dedicated to the promotion of the highest standards in education, research, and practice of oral and maxillofacial pathology. In addition to functions in support of the LSUHSC School of Dentistry, the department offers services to the dental profession and public. Its Oral Pathology Biopsy Service processes and diagnoses over 2,000 oral biopsies each year. Faculty in the department provided over 50 hours of continuing education to dental professionals in the past year.
