The Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology serves the people and dental profession of the state of Louisiana and surrounding areas by providing teaching, scholarly activity, and patient care concerning the diagnosis and management of disorders and abnormalities of the oral and maxillofacial region. Faculty are also devoted to teaching treatment of medically-compromised patients in the aging population and teaching students to achieve proficiency in taking and evaluating a pertinent medical and dental history; evaluating results from a diagnostic clinical laboratory; performing a thorough head-and-neck and oral examination; selecting, exposing and interpreting intraoral and extraoral radiographs; generating a differential diagnosis; developing a logical treatment plan based on the patient's needs; performing proper infection control; and teaching tobacco cessation. In 1999 the department started the postgraduate course in oral medicine to educate future oral medicine specialists to provide health care and to act as a liaison between the dental and medical communities. An oral medicine clinic is available for currently enrolled school patients as well as patients referred from the private sector. The department serves other departments providing tomographs, extra- and intra-oral radiographs, medical laboratory evaluations and oral medicine consultations. The department also tests patients and personnel involved in "at-risk" incidents and refers them for proper care.
