The Department of Microbiology participates fully in the teaching and research missions of the LSU School of Dentistry. Three faculty members will be located at the Dental School and conduct research there, Dr. Paul Fidel, Dr. Tom Wen and Dr. Glen Palmer. Dr. Fidel is also the Director of the Center for Oral and Craniofacial Biology and Head of the department of Oral Biology. In addition Microbiology participates in teaching the Dental Microbiology Course in the Fall semester. This year, Dr. Toby Rodriguez is Course Director and is assisted by Drs. Luftig, Thompson, Johnston, Palmer, Wen, Hagensee, Fidel and Leigh. Dr. Leigh is Head of General Dentistry. In addition Dr. Kenneth Johnston is Course Director of the Dental Hygiene Course in Microbiology, which achieved excellence this year in National Board scores. Seven microbiology faculty are members of the Center of Excellence in Oral and Craniofacial Biology and Dr. Luftig, the Department Head, serves as the Center's Internal Advisory Board. Research activities of the faculty include development of natural bacterial inhibitors, and pathogenesis and genetics of oral candidiasis. The Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Parasitology is fully committed to enhance research development in the School of Dentistry and the Center for Oral and Craniofacial Biology.

The Department of Microbiology Immunology and Parasitology is one of the five basic science departments of the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, which includes the schools of allied health, dentistry, graduate studies, medicine, and nursing. Due to close collaborations with the Center for Gene Therapy, Section of Infectious Diseases in the School of Medicine and the Research Institute for Children a wide variety of translational research is performed that focuses on host-pathogen interactions. Department faculty have strong, diverse research interests including candidiasis, bacterial infections of the eye, HIV/SIV vaccines, protease inhibitors and maternal transmission, sexually transmitted disease pathogenesis and toxoplasmosis/microsporidium immune defenses. The department offers M.S., Ph.D., and M.D./Ph.D. degrees. Students, postdoctoral research scientists, research faculty, and visiting faculty members make significant contributions to the department's activities.
