Admissions Information

General Information

Admission to both dental laboratory technology programs is through a competitive application process. The DLT Admissions Committee is charged with the responsibility of reviewing application materials, inteviewing each applicant, and accepting those who possess the best credentials. Up to 12 applicants are selected for the Associate of Science degree Program in Dental Laboratory Technology and up to 6 applicants are selected for the Bachelor of Science degree Program in Dental Laboratory Technology.

Two major areas are considered in the admissions process:

1. ACADEMIC ABILITY. Dental Laboratory Technology is a profession in which formal education requires competency in general education studies and intensive technical training. The following information is helpful to the Admissions Committee in determining the intellectual ability of the applicants:

  • OVERALL GPA. This numberic factor is calculated on the basis of all academic college work attempted. In other words, if a student makes and F in a course, which is subsequently retaken with a grade of B, for example, both the F and B will be used in calculating the GPA. In order to be invited to an admissions interview, the candidate must demonstrate a minimum GPA of 2.0 based on a 4.0 academic grade scale.
  • RECOMMENDATIONS Applicants are required to submit a Confidential Rating Form, which is included in the application packet, from one college teacher who has instructed them and has knowledge of the applicant's scholastic ability. The CRF provides the Committee with insight into the applicant's characteristics both as a student and as a person.

2. PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES Since dental technicians interact with the dental community, possession of the ability to communicate and to provide and obtain cooperation from other individuals is a must. Ability to manage stress and possession of high ethical standards are also considered to be desirable qualities. In addition, those interested in a career in dental laboratory technology should determine whether they have the commitment and flexibility required to succeed in the profession. These criteria are assessed by:

  • PERSONNAL INTERVIEW Each applicant deemed by the Committee to be competitive academically is invited to the dental school for a personnal interview with the Admissions Committee.
  • RECOMMENDATIONS The confidential rating form is designed to evaluate scholastic traits.
  • EXPERIENCE Experience in a dental laboratory setting is not required but is helpful; however, knowledge of the dental laboratory technology profession is recommended. This will better enhance the applicant's understanding of a dental technician's job responsibilities.
  • APTITUDE Manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and the capability of creating fine detail, along with the ability to discern color are necessary for the manipulation of various dental materials and fabrication of dental prostheses in the laboratory.

Admission Regulations

Application packets for admission to the DLT programs may be obtained from the LSUSD Office of Admissions after October 15th of the year prior to the year of anticipated enrollment. Requests may be made in writing or by calling (504) 941-8124; LSUHSC School of Dentistry, Office of Admissions, 1100 Florida Ave., Box 228, New Orleans, LA 70119. The Office of Admissions must receive all of the required application materials and/or documents by March 31st of the year of enrollment.

Application Materials and Official Documents, also see

  • COMPLETED APPLICATION All sections of the application as supplied by the Office of Admissions must be completed by the applicant.
  • APPLICATION FEE A fee of $50.00 (Subject to change without notice) must accompany the application. The fee must be paid by check since our Business Office is unable to accept cash.
  • PASSPORT-TYPE PHOTOGRAPH A recent color photograph -full face view- must accompany the application, affixed to the upper left hand corner.
  • OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended by the applicant must be sent to the Office of Admissions. These materials should come directly from the Registrar of the institution. Transcripts in sealed envelopes signed across the seal are also acceptable in special situations. Hand-carried transcripts may be considered unofficial and will not be accepted.
  • RECOMMENDATIONS Each applicant is required to submit a confidential recommendation form from one college professor who has instructed them in a course. The recommendation form will be supplied by the Office of Admissions in the application packet. The confidential rating form should be mailed directly to the Office of Admissions by the teacher, since hand-carried forms delivered by the applicant, by definition, have lost their confidentiality.

Recommendation letters from other teachers or supervisors are not required but are welcomed to enhance the application. These recommendations should be in the form of a letter on official letterhead stationary. Only one recommendation letter with a two-page maximum will be considered.

STATUS OF APPLICATION

The Office of Admissions attempts to inform applicants of the status of their application. Upon receipt of the application, a letter is sent informing the applicant of its arrival with a checklist of items received and not received by the office. Each time an additional item is received, a postcard will be sent updating this information to the applicant. A postcard indicating "application complete" will be sent when that status is achieved. It is the applicant's responsibility to make sure that all items are received by the March 31st. deadline in order to be considered for admission. An applicant will not be considered for an interview or admission if the application is incomplete.

CREDIT HOURS A minimum of the required semester hours of academic coursework must be completed at a college or university accredited by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) prior to registration in the Dental Laboratory Technology Program. Non-academic courses (i.e. bowling, dancing...) or courses for a specialized field of study are not acceptable. Applicants may contact the Program in Dental Laboratory Technology for information regarding the courses required for the college or university they are attending.
