The Department of Genetics
is one of six basic
science departments
at Louisiana State
University Health
Sciences Center (LSUHSC).
Research interests
include genetic and genomic factors contributing
to cancer and neurological diseases. Faculty
within the department
are members of the
Center of Excellence
in Oral and Craniofacial
Biology and are working
on the development
of collaborative
projects with other Center members. The Genetics Department also
provides
lectures to the dental
students as well
as clinical consultation
on genetic disorders
for which craniofacial
dysmorphology is
a feature.
The Department of Genetics
and the Gene Therapy
Program share the
sixth floor of the
Mervin L. Trail Clinical
Sciences Research
Building at 533 Bolivar
Street. The Department
offers Master of
Science and Doctor
of Philosophy degree
programs in human
genetics, and the
current enrollment
is 14-16 graduate
students. Recruitment
of faculty is ongoing,
and two new faculty
members are expected
to join the department
over the next year.
Development of shared
core facilities is
being cosponsored
by the Department
of Genetics to establish
a supportive research
infrastructure. Our
goal is to continue building
a strong department
in which all of the
faculty members are
successful in attracting
funding and committed
to establishing productive
programs that bring
credit to the department
and to the health
sciences center as
a whole.
