Instructional Services
Instructional Services offers form
production, scanning, and data analysis for remote
site clinic services, and surveys, such as quality
assurance, patient satisfaction, and alumni. It
provides course evaluations for the programs in
dentistry, dental hygiene, dental laboratory
technology, and continuing education and operates
the Scantron on-line testing and exam scoring system.
Graphic Arts
The Graphic Arts section offers a wide range of visual planning,
design, and production services to the faculty,
staff, and students of the LSU School of Dentistry.
LSUSD designers translate ideas into visual materials
to further the school’s mission to provide
exceptional education, research, and patient care.
Services that the section provides include medical
illustrations; publications,
clinical form, and chart design; slide
presentations; posters and poster presentations;
design and production of awards and certificates;
mounting and matting; and lamination.
In addition, in conjunction with
the department of photography, graphics arts produces the
faculty and student composite layouts.
Photography
The
Photography Section provides digital imaging and
scanning and can duplicate high quality slides from original material, photographs, books, and
journals. It offers B&W and/or color shootings on location or in the studio.
Limited macrophotography and
photomicrography are also available. Slides are
generated using Microsoft PowerPoint. The section
can save images of almost any type to either magnetic or optical media or
can print images to
either the Hewlett-Packard Color LaserJet printer
or the Epson photo printer with excellent results.
Educational Support
The Photography Section is responsible for the
production of a variety of photographic material
for faculty and students. These include direct photographs, copy photography, or
imaging from computer-generated files. Photography works very closely with
residents since much of their research requires
photographic imagery and the Louisiana Academy of Continuing
Dental Education and
Office of Community Affairs use the
Photography Section to produce a variety of
visuals and related documentation for their
various programs. The Photography Section works closely with
researchers at the school and throughout
the Health Sciences Center to produce publication-quality
photographs for manuscripts submitted for
publication. Photography
works closely with the Graphic Arts Section in the
imaging and processing of computer-generated
slides.
Television/AudioVisual

The Television and Audiovisual
Section offers high-quality video recording for
teaching and instructional purposes in its fully
equipped studio or in clinics and laboratories
throughout the school. The recording format is all
digital, and editing and custom productions are now
computer generated.
The audio/video distribution
center can send live or taped programs to and from
approximately 60 locations throughout the school.
An
intricate closed-circuit TV system can monitor
lecture halls and a Distance
Learning (compressed video) classroom permits
teaching students in other parts of
the state and can connect to other
electronic classrooms.
Teaching classrooms throughout the
school are fully equipped with LCD multimedia
projectors, computers, 35mm projectors, VCR’s,
wireless microphones, and laser pointers. Almost all types of multimedia and presentation equipment are
available. The section has an extensive videotape
library of approximately 800 tapes; these are available to all
faculty, students, staff, and dental professionals.
This section also
coordinates school telephone services.
The entire telephone network is programmed and
operated by a certified technician who can also
install fax machines and digital
phones and program changes.
Educational
Support
The
Television and Audiovisual Section setsup,
operates, and maintains all of the multimedia,
audiovisual, and TV production equipment
throughout the school. The section is also responsible for the
operation and maintenance of the equipment in the
distance learning classrooms both in New Orleans
and the classroom in Lafayette, La.
The section provides multimedia and audiovisual
services and equipment for resident's clinical and
research projects.
The TV/AV Section provides to the continuing
education
program the latest
state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for
presenters and attendees. Multiprojection
slide programs, computer and video “large”
screen projection, video recording and editing,
and the ability to show “live” TV
demonstrations to large numbers of clinicians are
just some of the capabilities of the section.
Editorial
The Editorial Section provides editing and
writing services for LSUSD faculty, students, and
staff. Following
the rules of standard usage and those set forth by
the American Medical Association, the section
editor reviews a document for correct grammar,
style, clarity, organization, and development and
in conference with the author suggests ways to
refine the writing.
The editor can edit all material that those
affiliated with LSUSD produce, and this material
typically includes, but is not limited to,
basic-science and clinical-science research
articles, chapters, books, NIH grant proposals,
theses, and miscellaneous school documents, such
as programs and brochures.
Besides serving as editor for Dentistry,
the newsletter for LSUSD alumni and friends, the
editor writes and publishes LSUSD News, the
in-house quarterly newsletter, is available for
writing assignments, and submits press releases on
faculty, student, and staff accomplishments to the
mainstream and dental media.
