The Department of Cell
Biology and Anatomy
has 20 full-time
faculty who teach
in all five professional
schools at LSUHSC:
Allied Health, Dentistry,
Medicine, Graduate
Studies, and Nursing.
The Department has
extramurally funded
research programs
in the areas of developmental
cell and neurobiology,
reproductive biology,
and systems neuroscience.
The Department has
recently established
two training programs.
The Program in Development,
Cell & Neurobiology
offers graduate training
leading to the M.S.
and Ph.D. degrees.
Areas of research
concentration are
cell biology, molecular
biology, developmental
biology, and neurobiology.
The goal of the program
is to train promising
students for competitive
careers in research
and teaching. Students
are encouraged to
develop broad expertise
in the disciplines
of biochemistry,
molecular biology,
immunology and cell
physiology. The Program
in Clinical Anatomy
is designed to train
graduate students
in the discipline
of gross anatomy
in order to meet
a critical need in
medical centers for
faculty with expertise
in instruction in
clinically oriented
gross anatomy. The
department has close
affiliations with
the Neuroscience,
Cancer, and Oral
and Craniofacial
Biology Centers and
with the Program
in Gene Therapy.
The Department manages
several core research
facilities, including
a transgenic facility,
electron microscopy
suite, and computer
imaging laboratory.
The Department of Cell
Biology and Anatomy
contributes to a
variety of programs
at the School of
Dentistry. The Department
is responsible for
instruction of first
year courses for
Dental and Dental
Hygiene students,
including courses
in the anatomical
disciplines of gross
anatomy, histology,
and neuroscience.
The department also
offers an advanced
course in Postgraduate
Head and Neck Anatomy
for dental residents.
Several of our faculty
are members of the
Oral and Craniofacial
Biology Center of
Excellence, and one
serves as the Assistant
Director of the Center.
Department faculty
housed at the School
of Dentistry have
research programs
which examine basic
cell biological processes
of the oral cavity.
