In Education…

  • Founded in 1966, the LSU Health Sciences Center School of Dentistry has educated more than 70% of the dental professionals practicing in Louisiana today. Since its inception, the school has educated 1,977 dentists, 918 dental hygienists, and 294 dental laboratory technologists.
  • LSUSD offers degrees in dentistry, dental hygiene, dental laboratory technology, and, in advanced education, certificates in pediatric dentistry, endodontics, orthodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, maxillofacial prosthetics, advanced general dentistry, and general practice residency. It offers the combined certificate in oral and maxillofacial surgery and doctor of medicine degree, and a Master of Science in oral biology. With the University of Louisiana, LSUSD also offers via distance-learning the dental hygiene degree program to students in Lafayette.
  • LSUSD is a primary provider of continuing education for dental professionals in Louisiana offering over 1800 continuing education hours annually. Distance-learning statewide has now become a reality with the advent of new technology and resources.

In Patient Care…

  • Each year, LSUSD students and residents are responsible for nearly 100,000 patient visits in 22 locations throughout Louisiana, many of which are underserved areas.
  • LSUSD Dept. of Pediatric Dentistry partners with Children's Hospital to provide care to underserved children throughout the Greater New Orleans Region via a mobile dental unit "Tooth Bus." The Bus travels to five locations throughout the city to provide care.
  • With a Health Care Financing Administration Title XIX contract, the school administers to the 2000 residents with mental retardation and developmental disabilities at the nine Louisiana developmental centers quality assurance, oral-disease prevention, and oral-health education.
  • LSUSD provides oral health care to musicians of New Orleans through the LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans Musicians Clinic.
  • LSUSD provides oral health care to patients with HIV through the Ted Wisniewski Center of Excellence for the Treatment of Immunodeficiency Diseases in New Orleans and conducts research to address the oral health care issues of HIV patients. LSUSD developed the first LSU HIV Dental Clinic at the Medical Center of Louisiana, New Orleans in 1994. Since that time the clinic patient population has grown from 1,200 to 3,500.
  • LSUSD sponsors and conducts numerous community dental education programs. The school promotes Children's Dental Health Month each February by providing dental education programs to over 250 children from public, parochial, and private elementary schools in the greater New Orleans area. Students also provide caregiver instruction to those who work in homes for the elderly, and are involved with the annual Louisiana Special Olympics, Special Smiles screening, education, and referral service program to over 500 Special Olympics participants.
  • LSUSD serves as the primary provider of forensic dental services to police and emergency personnel in Louisiana and Mississippi.

In Research…

  • The LSUSD Center of Excellence in Oral & Craniofacial Biology is the only collaborative research initiative in Louisiana to focus on oral health. It creates a rich research environment for the education and development of students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty researchers in dental and craniofacial biology -- while enhancing oral health care for citizens everywhere.
  • LSUSD boasts a state-of-the-art six-chair clinical research facility complete with an oral surgery suite that will serve as a premiere site for clinical trails worldwide. This clinic serves as a valuable resource for Louisiana citizens both from an oral health prospective, as well as an economic resource to attract federal and private dollars from outside the state.
