History

Eric
J. Hovland, DDS,
MEd, MBA
Dean,
LSUHSC School of
Dentistry
(1993-present)
Dr. Eric J. Hovland,
the current dean
of LSUSD, obtained
his Doctor of Dental
Surgery degree from
the University of
Maryland in 1972
and then entered
the U. S. Air Force,
where he obtained
his certificate in
general practice
residency in 1973.
In 1977, he obtained
both his certificate
in endodontics from
the Medical College
of Virginia and his
Master of Education
in Adult Education
Degree from Virginia
Commonwealth University.
He then completed
a Master of Business
Administration degree
at Loyola College
in Baltimore, Maryland,
in 1980. In 1985,
he was awarded an
American Council
on Education Fellowship
in Academic Administration
and spent a year
in the President's
Office at the University
of Louisville.
Dr. Hovland joined
the Department of
Endodontics at the
Baltimore College
of Dental Surgery,
University of Maryland,
in 1977. During his
16 years in Maryland,
he was promoted to
the position of professor
and chairman of the
Department of Endodontics,
chaired many scientific
and advisory committees,
and was active in
the statewide university
system. In 1993,
he joined the LSU
Health Sciences Center
School of Dentistry
as dean and professor
of endodontics.
Dr. Hovland is a past
president of the
American Association
of Endodontists and
is a prominent member
of many American
dental associations,
including the IADR
and ADEA. Both nationally
and internationally,
he is a respected
lecturer in endodontics
and has received
many honors and awards,
such as fellowship
in the International
College of Dentists
and the American
College of Dentists.
He has 29 scientific
publications to his
credit and has also
received many grants
to aid investigations.
He was editor of
Dental Clinics of
North America, Symposium
on Endodontics; coauthor
of Problem Solving
in Endodontics; and
recently editor of
Dental Clinics of
North America, Symposium
on Traumatic Injuries
to Teeth.
Since joining the LSU
Health Sciences Center
as dean in 1993,
he has continued
to pursue excellence,
remaining involved
internationally with
dental education
issues. He is an
active member in
the ADEA Council
of Deans, has served
as chair of the ADEA
Legislative Advisory
Committee, and, in
2000, he was elected
chair of the American
Dental Association
Commission on Dental
Accrediation (CDA).
The mission of CDA
is to ensure the
quality of dental
and dental-related
education. It conducts
accreditation reviews
to determine the
degree to which dental
education programs
meet the CDA accreditation
standards.
Under his leadership
for the past nine
years, LSUSD has
developed three strategic
plans and has accomplished
great strides in
dental education,
research and patient
care. For further
