In 1993, he joined the LSU Health Sciences Center School of Dentistry as dean and professor of endodontics.

Dr. Hovland is a past president of the American Association of Endodontists and is a prominent member of many American dental associations, including the IADR and ADEA. Both nationally and internationally, he is a respected lecturer in endodontics and has received many honors and awards, such as fellowship in the International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists. He has 29 scientific publications to his credit and has also received many grants to aid investigations. He is an active member in the ADEA Council of Deans, has served as chair of the ADEA Legislative Advisory Committee, and, in 2000, he was elected chair of the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accrediation (CDA). The mission of CDA is to ensure the quality of dental and dental-related education. It conducts accreditation reviews to determine the degree to which dental education programs meet the CDA accreditation standards.

Under his leadership for the past nine years, LSUSD has developed three strategic plans and has accomplished great strides in dental education, research and patient care.
