Jack Henry Rayson, DDS
Dean, LSUHSC School of Dentistry
(1976-1993)

On November 20, 1995, the LSU School of Dentistry lost a valued colleague and friend in Jack Henry Rayson, DDS. As dean of the school from 1976 to 1993, he played a pivotal role in the education and training of Louisiana's dental health care professionals. During his tenure, the school underwent phenomenal growth, moving from its infancy to maturity.

"Jack Rayson was an excellent teacher and clinician," said Dr. Allen Copping, president of the Louisiana State University system. "He served as dean with distinction and dedication." His longtime colleague, Dr. Anthony B. Carimi, head, Department Head of Dental Auxiliaries, said "He was a man of great integrity. Dean Rayson was tirelessly dedicated to the dental school and, at the same time, sensitive to the needs of students, faculty and staff."

As dean, Dr. Rayson refined the mini-clinic system, replaced dental equipment, and refurbished and equipped the seventh floor pre-clinical labs. He also implemented a computer system in the clinics and developed a permanent clinic for hygiene students. Dr. Robert Shaye, previous director of research for the school, stated that "in the leanest of financial times, Dr. Rayson found the funds to support research, sending our students to meetings here and abroad." Also, under his guidance, the LSU School of Dentistry implemented a new computerized patient management program.

Because of Dean Rayson's contributions to the school, the first 30-unit simulation laboratory was named in his memory in 1996. The simulation laboratory enables students and practitioners to practice on simulated patient models prior to patient treatment.

A native of Gonzales, Texas, Dr. Rayson earned a B.S. from the University of Texas in 1953, a D.D.S. from the University of Texas Dental Branch in 1957, and a M.A. from the University of New Orleans in 1976. Dr. Rayson was appointed to the LSU Medical Center faculty in 1969 as associate professor and head of the Department of Prosthodontics. He was promoted to assistant dean for clinical administration in 1972 and to associate dean in 1975.

Before coming to LSU Medical Center, Dr. Rayson was an assistant professor of prosthodontics at Baylor University College of Dentistry, where he was honored as Faculty Member of the Year, and at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. He was licensed to practice dentistry in Louisiana, Texas, and Kentucky. He was a captain in the United States Air Force from 1956-1961 and served as chief of the Prosthodontics Section at Walker Air Force Base in Roswell, New Mexico. He was a consultant to the Veterans Administration Medical Center in both New Orleans and in Biloxi. He practiced at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Kentucky Medical Center and Walker Air Force Base.

Dr. Rayson was also a community leader in mental health advocacy. He was a member of the State Mental Health Advisory Board and the Governor's Mental Health Task Force. He served on the Board of Directors of the Friends Alliance for the Mentally Ill, and was elected its president in 1986. During his tenure, the Friendship Clubs, which the alliance sponsored, grew from one to three, and the alliance established housing for ninety mentally ill and employment opportunities for forty.

For exemplary service to the community and dentistry, Dr. Rayson was awarded the Louisiana Dental Association Distinguished Dental Service Award and the Pierre Fauchard Academy, Louisiana Section, Outstanding Dentist of the Year Award. Dr. Rayson's research activities include highly regarded studies on prosthodontics and dental education. He lectured throughout the United States and abroad. His articles and abstracts have appeared in prestigious dental journals, and he co-authored a dental textbook as well.
