Founded in 1966, the LSUHSC School of Dentistry is the only dental school in Louisiana and has educated more than 75% of the dental professionals practicing statewide. Since its inception, LSUSD has educated 2,148 dentists, 1030 dental hygienists and 294 dental laboratory technologists.
LSUSD offers degrees in dentistry, dental hygiene and dental laboratory technology as well as advanced education certification in seven dental specialties. The school also offers a combined certificate in oral & maxillofacial surgery with a doctor of medicine degree, as well as a Master of Science degree in oral biology. Two satellite dental hygiene education programs are also offered in Baton Rouge and Lafayette to address the profession’s shortage.
LSUSD offers care at 17 clinic locations statewide, including five serving the Greater New Orleans area alone, many of which are underserved areas. The school’s three main satellite locations are in Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Alexandria.
The LSUSD Center of Excellence in Oral & Craniofacial Biology, the only collaborative research initiative in Louisiana to focus on oral health, creates a rich research environment for the education and development of students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty researchers in dental and craniofacial biology. •With funding through the Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA), LSUSD provides oral health care to patients with HIV in both south and central Louisiana.

• A primary provider of continuing education for dental professionals in Louisiana, LSUSD offered 731 continuing education hours in 2007.
• The school also sponsors and participates in numerous community dental education programs, including Children's Dental Health Month, Louisiana Special Olympics and visits to area schools to educate children about proper oral health care.
• LSUSD serves as the primary provider of forensic dental services to police and emergency personnel in Louisiana and Mississippi.
