The Department of Oral and Craniofacial Biology is a newly approved department at the school of dentistry that will be responsible for teaching the basic science curriculum for the dental and dental hygiene programs as well as conduct primary basic science research in the dental school. Previously the basic science faculty at the dental school came from the school of medicine. However, with this new administrative unit comes a tremendous opportunity to focus the basic science research at the dental school, interact with the clinical departments in both the teaching and research missions of the school, and enhance the basic science curriculum. A total of 17 faculty members will be recruited over the next six years in the basic science disciplines of microbiology, pharmacology, anatomy/cell biology, and physiology. There will also be a number of clinician scientists whose primary focus is research. Faculty will have secondary appointments in the respective basic science departments in the school of medicine or clinical departments in the school of dentistry. The department will also be directly affiliated with the Center of Excellence in Oral and Craniofacial Biology which provides resources and infrastructure for the entire research enterprise at the school of dentistry.
