The Department of Oral and Craniofacial Biology was approved in 2007. It currently serves secondary appointments for basic science researchers at the dental school as well as for those responsible for teaching the basic science curriculum for the dental and dental hygiene programs. This administrative unit thus offers a tremendous opportunity to focus on the basic science research at the dental school, interact with the clinical departments in both the teaching and research missions of the school, and enhance the basic science curriculum. Faculty members have primary appointments through either the School of Dentistry or School of Medicine. The department is also directly affiliated with the Center of Excellence in Oral and Craniofacial Biology, including the Biomedical/Biomaterials Core Facility and Statistical Core, which together provides resources and infrastructure for the entire research enterprise at the School of Dentistry.
