Ingenta, a commercial provider of full-text publications, now gives online access to the full-text  of the Journal of the American Dental Association starting with 1998.   The journal entry in the library catalog  (innopac.lsuhsc.edu) has a link to this site.  Once you retrieve the JADA entry, (see the illustration below) click on the link to Ingenta, and then select the desired volume and issue.  JADA full-text is available from any PC on the LSUHSC network.

 

Top consumer web sites
The Consumer and Patient Health Information Section (CAPHIS) of the Medical Library Association (MLA) has recently put together a list of the “Top Ten” Most Useful Websites for health consumers.  These sites were evaluated on strict criteria: credibility, sponsorship/authorship, content, audience, currency, disclosure, purpose, links, design, interactivity, and disclaimers. These are the sites, in alphabetical order:

Cancer.gov     www.cancer.gov
This website has a large number of articles and informational handouts for both health professionals and patients, searchable by type of cancer or body location.  There is also a section that explains possible oral complications of chemotherapy or radiation.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)      www.cdc.gov
A valuable resource for both the health professional and the consumer, the CDC has a site on oral health resources  including state-by-state reports, device evaluation forms, a “Brush up” quiz for parents and water fluoridation maps.

familydoctor.org      www.familydoctor.org
This website is for the consumer and has handouts that can be printed and distributed to patients.  Some of the handouts are in both English and Spanish. A search on “oral” or “dental” will bring you to many of these links.

healthfinder®      www.healthfinder.gov
A government site produced by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, U.S. Department of Health and Hospitals, healthfinder has a section on health issues including oral health, sections for parents, and a section for children to do their own searching, enter art contests, play games, and search the Internet safely. 

HIV InSite     hivinsite.ucsf.edu
HIV InSite is a comprehensive site that includes research, treatment options, and a section profiling the oral manifestations of HIV.

Kidshealth®     www.kidshealth.org
Kidshealth®, a product of the Nemours Foundation, is a great site with dental information written for the adult, adolescent, and child.

Mayo Clinic     www.mayohealth.org
Oriented to adults searching for health information, this site has a drug information section and several articles on dental health conditions.

MEDEM     www.medem.com/MedLB/medlib_entry.cfm
MEDEM is an information partnership of leading medical societies and contains articles on various dental and oral health issues including baby bottle tooth decay, tooth development, and tobacco use.

MEDLINEplus     www.medlineplus.gov
MEDLINEplus, the National Library of Medicine’s own consumer health site,  is in English and Spanish.  Searchers can look for information on diseases or conditions, or drugs references, or browse a medical encyclopedia.  MEDLINEplus has links to articles, handouts, and informational sites by the experts.

NOAH: New York Online Access to Health     www.noah-health.org
This comprehensive site combines information from the experts into one forum.  In English and Spanish, NOAH covers basic oral hygiene, common problems and procedures, special problems, pediatric dentistry, and information resources.
