Dental Decks

The dental library recently received an award for over $500.00 from the LSUHSC Faculty Wives Club for the purchase of new Dental Decks.  The library purchased Dental Decks, parts I and  II, and Dental Hygiene Decks, all published in 2001.  The decks, used by students studying for national board exams,  are boxes of flashcards with questions on the front and answers and explanations on the back.  Part II  includes a booklet with oral pathology color photographs, and the dental hygiene set includes booklets with color photographs and  case studies.   The boxes of cards are kept on reserve at the circulation desk for use in the library only.

We appreciate the generosity of the Faculty Wives Club and thank them for their continuing support of the library.

Anyone wishing to order a personal set of decks can order directly from the Decks Corporation at http://www.dentaldecks.com/index.php

SCIENCEDIRECT

ScienceDirect is one of  the numerous resources provided to the LSUHSC community by its libraries.   This electronic database of scientific, technical, and medical journals published by Elsevier Science includes about 1200 peer-reviewed journals in 14 fields.  One of the main features of ScienceDirect is full-text access to articles in 155 Elsevier journals to which the LSUHSC libraries subscribe in print format.  You can also find citations and abstracts for non-subscribed journals in ScienceDirect.

To access ScienceDirect, go to www.sciencedirect.com.  You will also find a link on the dental school library home page under "Databases"  at "full-text access providers."   Another entry point is through Innopac, the LSUHSC libraries online catalog, where the record for each Elsevier journal owned by the library includes a link to ScienceDirect.   The 5 subscribed dental titles available full-text are Archives of Oral Biology, Biomaterials, Dental Materials, Journal of Dentistry, and Oral Oncology.  ScienceDirect has full-text for most subscribed journal issues in the current year plus four previous years.

Once inside the database, click on "Publications" and select subscribed journals to see the list of full-text titles available.  You can browse tables of contents and abstracts for non-subscribed journals, search the entire database for a subject or author, or limit your browsing and searching to one of the 14 fields, such as medicine, materials science, or immunology and microbiology.

In spite of the limited number of full-text journals available, ScienceDirect is a valuable resource with a number of unique features.   One such feature, the inclusion of uncorrected proofs of in-press articles, allows researchers to identify relevant articles before publication.  Another unique function is the citation locator.  When you display a list of articles in an issue, and then click on either abstract or article, you can then select the action  "cited by," to display more recent related articles in ScienceDirect that cite the selected article.

The search feature offers several options.  In addition to searching the entire database, you can search journals, limit to abstract databases (MEDLINE is the only one available to us), or use Scirus, Elsevier's web search engine that indexes evaluated scientific web sites.

You can view and print full-text in either html or pdf format.  Html provides active links in the article and references. ScienceDirect provides the ability to export citations to a citation manager, such as ProCite, Reference Manager, or EndNote.  To obtain copies of articles in non-subscribed journals, bring or e-mail your citations to Julie Schiavo, interlibrary loan librarian at the dental library.

By creating a personal profile, you are able to save searches, receive e-mail alerts, and create a personal journal list.  This feature is available free to LSUHSC users.

ScienceDirect provides online help and search tips.  A brief user guide is also available in the library.  If you are interested in using ScienceDirect and would like a demonstration, please call the dental reference librarians at 619-8550.
