New
Cards for Photocopiers & Printers
Late last year, LSUHSC Auxiliary Enterprises began the process of
switching from the Vendamat copycards
(with maroon
print) to a new LSUHSC
cash card (with black print). The new card may be used in the
dental
library computer lab pay printer and both library coin-op
photocopiers. To ease transition to the new cards,
one photocopier
in the dental library will remain with the old system until the end of
January. The bookstore
sells the cash cards for $1.00 each.
One may also add money to LSUHSC IDs with a magnetic stripe on the
back, using them instead of the cash card to
activate printers and photocopiers. For photocopiers, the ID or cash card is inserted into
the slot in the vend
mechanism and money is inserted into the dollar or
coin slot. The card will then be credited and copies may be made
for $.07 each.
For use in the printer, one
must first format the ID
or card in the "mini-manager" machine. Dollar bills up to
$20.00
may then be fed into the machine and added to the card or ID. An ID or cash card
carries a maximum value
of $22.00. The mini-manager does not give change and it does not accept
coins.
Both the ID and cash card work
in the pay printers and photocopiers in the Isché Medical Library as
well.
Although Auxiliary Enterprises
manages the card system and pay printers, library staff members will
be
happy to try to answer any questions or solve problems with the
equipment or cards.
Useful
Web Sites
Over the last few months, the library staff has been on a continuing quest
to find new, interesting, and useful web
sites for the use of the dental community.
Here are three sites that we recommend:
The Free Medical
Journals Site
www.freemedicaljournals.com
This web site provides links to
several health sciences-related journal web sites.
Access to these journals is free
to anyone from any computer. Journals
may be searched by specialty or by name.
The site also notes any journal
that was formerly listed on the page as free but is no longer available.
There are eight dental journals listed including
Advances in Dental Research, Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and
Medicine, and Angle Orthodontist.
Also
available are Cleft Palate – Craniofacial Journal Online, Microbiology,
CA – A Cancer Journal for Clinicians,
and the Journal of Biochemistry, just to name a few.
Pain.com
Information on Pain
www.pain.com
This site is hosted by the
Dannemiller Memorial Educational Foundation, which specializes in pain
education and is
one of the leading Internet resources on pain management.
It contains a library of pain-related articles, CME
opportunities, online slide shows, discussion boards, and chat rooms.
On the Professional Information side
of this web site, there are dozens of links to other sites, listings of
societies, foundations, and medical publications.
There are also a number of reports and news articles.
Clinical Research
Associates: Clinicians guide to dental products and techniques
www.cranews.com
CRA (Clinical Research Associates) is a non-profit organization that
serves dentists by evaluating dental materials,
devices, and concepts for efficacy and clinical usefulness. Findings are
published as rapidly as possible in the
CRA Newsletter (ask at the dental library circulation desk for issues)
and online. This site
functions as a
supplement to the CRA Newsletter.
It lists the most recent CRA findings and contains links to some of
their
older research reports. These
are listed under the “Additional Study Details” menu.
From this site, you can also
subscribe to the CRA Newsletter in paper or online form.
