New Features in Ovid

In early October the LSUHSC Libraries moved from a local Ovid system to Ovid online.  This change enables access to more current articles in MEDLINE, and adds new databases to the Ovid system.   Biological Abstracts, Dissertation Abstracts, ERIC, MEDLINE daily updates, PREMEDLINE, and PsychINFO may now be searched on the familiar Ovid interface.   Another new feature of our system is Journals@Ovid, which provides access to the tables of contents and abstracts of hundreds of titles plus  the full text of 18 journals covering 1993 - June 2002.  Links to the LSUHSC library catalog have also been added to citations in Ovid to allow the searcher to determine if the library owns the title and specific volume cited.  If the journal is listed in Innopac, there may also be a link to full text online.

PreMEDLINE includes new articles added to the database before they are indexed with subject headings, providing earlier access to each citation.  Keywords in titles and abstracts, instead of medical subject headings, will retrieve citations in this database.  In addition to the above listed databases, CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature) and Health & Psychosocial Instruments are still included in the LSUHSC Ovid system.

Please contact Liz Strother or Julie Schiavo at the dental library if you have any questions about Ovid or would like assistance with a search.  Remember that the librarians will also be glad to run searches for you.

Library Barcode Required for Remote Access to Databases

Did you know that you have access to most LSUHSC databases from your home computer or laptop?  For some databases you don't need to login and for others, your LSUHSC NT ID and password will work.  A number of databases, however, require you to have a library barcode.

Remote access to these databases is available through the dental library web page under Additional Databases.  Click on the link for additional databases and you will be directed to a page listing the databases available.  You must scroll down the left side of the page until you reach a heading for Remote Access.  Choose Academic.

You will then be prompted for your User ID and PIN.  For BOTH the User ID and the PIN, enter the first nine digits of your LSUHSC Library barcode. Then, change the Institution to “Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center – New Orleans.”  Click on Authenticate and you will be allowed access to the databases.

Remote access via barcode number is available for the following databases:

  • WebSPIRS/Silver Platter

  • ProQuest Direct – ABI/Inform

  • Books in Print

  • Cambridge Scientific Abstracts

  • InfoTrac/GaleNet

  • Lexis-Nexis Academic

  • MathSciNet

  • OED Online (Oxford English Dictionary)

  • Ulrich’s International Periodical Directory

  • WorldCat (via OCLC FirstSearch)

So if you want to search the above databases from home, please make sure that you first visit the dental library  and ask a staff member to place a barcode on your LSUHSC ID.  Information on access to all of the LSUHSC Library databases can be found on the Isché Library web site.
